Your guide towards moving to Finland
For studies starting in August 2025, the joint application period is starting in January 2025 (From 8th Jan–22nd Jan). This joint application period offers more programs compared to the other joint application period that starts in August/September. Please note that there are few universities who have their own separate application period which might start already in November or December 2024. Visit studyinfo.fi or check from university's website in which you are intending to apply!
From 1st January 2025, applicants (for bachelor's and master's degree) from outside of EU/EEA or Switzerland are required to pay an application fee of 100 euros. You don't need to pay the application fee if you meet certain conditions.
You can also move with your family even if you are coming to Finland for studies. You can apply for a spouse residence permit and at the same time you can also apply for your child's residence permit.
Even though the studies are not free in Finland anymore but you can get different levels of scholarships which can lower or completely remove your tuition fee. The scholarships are not in the same number as they used to be but here are the two scholarships that are still available at the time of admission:
✳️ Early bird scholarship = It is available at the time of admission for tuition fee paying students in which you can get a reduction of 1500 euros during the first year of your studies.
✳️ Tuition Fee Scholarship = It varies from university to university but usually you get 50% or 100% off for your tuition fee.
Few vocational colleges or schools provide free education for international students in English language. These programs are related to chef training, becoming a mechanical fitter or nurse.
Vamia is a vocational school in Finland located in a city of Vaasa. It offer programs in six fields including Energy services, Technology services, Wellfare services, Business services, Tourism services. The education is free here and you just have to manage your living expenses yourself.
You can continue to live in Finland after your studies. If you get a job, you can apply for a work permit. There is also a possibility to get a job search visa if you are struggling to find a job at the time when your student residence permit is expiring.
You may apply for a residence permit for studies, if
your studies lead to a degree or a vocational qualification, or
you are coming to Finland as an exchange student.
You cannot be granted a residence permit for studies, if your studies mainly consist of distance learning online and do not require you to stay in Finland.
If you plan to work or to engage in business activities in Finland, you will usually need a residence permit.
There are different residence permit applications for different types of work.
You can get a permanent residence permit if you have lived in Finland for an uninterrupted period of 4 years with a continuous residence permit (an A permit); and the requirements for issuing a continuous residence permit are still met.
You cannot be granted a permanent residence permit for studies or to look for work.
However, if you have been granted an extended permit for studies or to look for work, you may apply for a permanent residence permit on some other grounds if you meet the conditions of the permit you apply for.

If you live in Finland for 5 consecutive years and clear a language exam (YKI) either in Finnish or Swedish language then you are eligible to apply for a Finnish citizenship.
